Record-Breaking Wānaka A&P Show Generates $19.3 Million for Regional Economy

The Wānaka A&P Show has generated an estimated $19.3 million in additional spending for the Wānaka, Upper Clutha and Queenstown Lakes region, reinforcing its position as one of New Zealand’s largest agricultural and community events.

Held on 13 and 14 March 2026, the Show attracted over 44,000 attendees, the highest attendance in its history.

An independent economic impact assessment found the Show generated $19.3 million in spending that would not have occurred in the absence of the event, highlighting its significant contribution to the regional economy.

Upper Clutha A&P Society Chair Keith Cooper said the results demonstrate the importance of the Show to both the local economy and community.

“These figures reinforce what our community has known for many years – the Wānaka A&P Show is much more than a two-day event,” Cooper said.

“It attracts visitors from throughout New Zealand, supports local businesses, showcases our rural heritage and creates a genuine sense of community pride.”

The report found that approximately 46 percent of attendees were visitors to the region, while those travelling primarily to attend the Show stayed for an average of 3.5 nights, up from 3.1 nights in 2025. The event is also continuing to attract new audiences, with 15 percent of attendees visiting the Show for the first time.

Cooper said the benefits of the Show extend well beyond the event weekend.

“A successful financial result ensures the Upper Clutha A&P Society, through the Wānaka A&P Foundation, can continue reinvesting more than $85,000 annually into grants, projects and initiatives that support sports clubs, emergency services, rural development, wellbeing, environmental projects and education opportunities.”

“In this way, the success of the Show directly contributes to the strength, resilience and future prosperity of the wider Wānaka district.”

The Wānaka A&P Foundation distributes funding to a wide range of local organisations each year, ensuring the benefits of the Show continue to be felt throughout the community.

“The Wānaka A&P Show is far more than an event. It’s a destination A&P Show and an enduring community asset that connects generations, celebrates local identity and creates opportunities for future rural generations to thrive,” Cooper said.

Planning is already underway for the Society’s milestone 90th Wānaka A&P Show, to be held on 12 and 13 March 2027.
