In 2026, the Wānaka A&P Foundation awarded two Capability Development Grants to support individuals pursuing education and training that will strengthen New Zealand’s rural sector. Lincoln University Animal Science student Claudia Paterson was one of this year’s recipients, receiving funding to assist with her tuition fees. Below is Claudia’s report on the impact the grant has had during her first semester of study.

The grant funding has been used to help cover my tuition fees for my Animal Science degree at Lincoln University. This support has reduced the financial pressure of studying, allowing me to focus on my education and make the most of the opportunities available.
Since receiving the grant, I have successfully completed my first semester, developing knowledge across subjects including chemistry, biology and soil science, while gaining valuable practical experience through laboratory and hands-on learning. One of my greatest achievements has been adapting quickly to university life and finding a healthy balance between study, wellbeing and social life. The biggest challenge has been adjusting to being away from my family and support network.
The grant has reinforced my passion for the animal production industry and given me confidence that I have chosen the right career path. I am incredibly grateful for this support as I continue working towards completing my degree and pursuing a career in Animal Science.
