As the Upper Clutha A&P Society continues to grow, so too does the way we work behind the scenes. This month we’re highlighting the why and how, next month we’ll profile the who!
Society Evolution
Did you know that the Upper Clutha A&P Society has now operated under a Board governance structure for eight years?
The Board was established on 21 November 2018, with Grant Ruddenklau appointed as our inaugural Chairman. Since then, the governance model has continued to evolve, helping guide the Society through one of the most exciting periods of growth in the Show’s history.
Why the Change?
For more than 80 years, the traditional President-led structure served the Society incredibly well. It was built on passion, dedication, and an army of volunteers who made the Wānaka A&P Show what it is today.
But as the Show grew, so did the responsibilities behind the scenes.
With tens of thousands of visitors, hundreds of exhibitors, volunteers, sponsors, contractors and increasing compliance requirements, it became clear that the Society needed a governance model that could support a modern, large-scale event.
The move to a Board structure provided:
- A structured governance and financial model.
- A focus on risk, compliance and legal responsibilities.
- Clear accountability.
- A long-term strategic vision for the future of the Society and the Show.
- Today, our governance, management and committee model continues to strengthen each year and relies on many people playing different but equally important roles.
After all, it takes far more than a few people to put on one of New Zealand’s largest A & P shows, it takes an entire community rolling up their sleeves, sharing a laugh, and working as a team.
Together, we’re building on a proud history while ensuring the Show continues to thrive for generations to come.
