Society Supports Farmers Following Devastating Winds

The Upper Clutha A&P Society has donated $5,000 to the Otago Rural Support Trust, to be used within the region for the benefit of South Otago farmers affected by October’s massive and destructive winds.

Since the event, the Trust has been working tirelessly to locate and supply generators of all sizes to farms left without power – matching supply to need and coordinating voluntary delivery by its trustees. In addition, the Trust has provided financial support to local schools offering breakfasts and lunches to rural families, as well as access to showers and laundry facilities.

Efforts are also focused on promoting personal wellbeing and safety – sharing health messages and safe chainsaw use information to help prevent further tragedy.

Described by the Minister of Rural Affairs as the biggest wind event in New Zealand in living memory, the disaster has caused widespread damage across the region. As the Trust’s work transitions from emergency response to recovery, ongoing help will focus on community wellbeing, including gatherings that bring people together for food, connection, and support.
